Preparing for Freezing Weather in Pawleys Island

Freezing Weather Preparation

According to the National Weather Service, South Carolina is expected to experience lows in the 20s and not rise above the 30s until late in the week. This marks the longest extended period of days below freezing that Pawleys Island has seen in years. Additionally, snow and/or freezing rain with potential ground accumulation is predicted. These colder-than-normal temperatures could cause significant issues for exposed and unwinterized pipes as they thaw.

For Vacant Homes

Most vacant homes have already been winterized and should remain secure. However, if your home is unoccupied and has not yet been winterized, we strongly recommend taking action within the next 24 hours. As always, The Dieter Company is here to assist with arranging a plumber to help winterize your property. Recommended steps include:

  • Shut off exterior pipes: Turn off water to hose bibs, outdoor showers, and any exposed pipes.

  • Drain irrigation systems: Ensure your irrigation system is drained and winterized.

  • Pools and hot tubs: Contact your service provider for specific instructions on winterizing these features.

  • Set your thermostat: Maintain an indoor temperature of at least 60°F (65 is better). Do not turn off your HVAC system.

  • Close garage doors: Keep garage doors closed to retain heat around any pipes in the area.

For Occupied Homes

If your home is occupied, additional steps can help protect your pipes and we have already texted your renters to assist with these items:

  • Keep faucets dripping: Letting water drip from faucets can prevent pressure buildup that could cause pipes to burst, even if ice forms in the line.

  • Open cabinets: In the kitchen and bathrooms, open cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the pipes.

  • Monitor exposed pipes: Regularly check outside areas to ensure pipes do not burst.

For Homes with Renters

If your home has renters, they have been notified to assist where possible. Renters have been instructed to contact our 24/7 emergency line immediately if any issues arise to ensure prompt assistance.
